The Fremont Chamber of Commerce hosts a policy forum on the morning of March 5 - "IT security for small business."

The forum will feature breakfast and a panel discussion. The panelists include Fremont Police Chief Richard Lucero, Planet Magpie owner Robert Douglas, COO Navraj Bawa of Unitek College and a special agent from the FBI.

Topic Overview:With recent hacking stories, the American public is full aware of the possibility that one’s personal information, protected business information, reputation and future economic viability can be compromised through your IT resources. However, the perception is that IT security threats are limited mainly to consumer data theft, efforts aimed at huge corporate entities or organizations with valuable intellectual property (IP) assets. Furthermore, there is a perception that security demands can be satisfied through the simple purchase of anti-virus software and changing passwords periodically.

This is incorrect. All businesses are at risk.

Small businesses are at risk and will only become more likely to be targeted in the coming years.

Richard Lucero
Chief of Police, Fremont Police Department
Police Chief Richard Lucero has been a police officer for 26 years, serving his entire career with Fremont. His assignments have included working Patrol, S.W.A.T., Narcotics, Internal Affairs, Street Crimes, and Special Operations Division Commander. Most recently he has served as the Department's Patrol Division Commander. Police Chief Lucero is a graduate of POST Command College, Class 40, and a lifetime member of the California Narcotic Officers’ Association. He is also a graduate of San Jose State University and Santa Clara University School of Law. He received the CALI Excellence for the Future Award in the study of local government law and is a member of the California State Bar.

Navraj Bawa
Chief Operations Officer, Unitek College
Mr. Bawa has over 16 years in postsecondary education and initiated the development of Unitek College’s Allied Health Programs in 2000, while simultaneously running two separate private postsecondary education companies that span four diverse divisions (Healthcare, EMS, Renewable Energy and Information Technology). Over the last 13 years Navraj launched all four divisions and drove all of these divisions to profitability and consistent growth including our Nursing Division launched in 2004. Mr. Bawa is a tech savvy professional and is very experienced with both campus based and online education
