Ohlone Promises Free College Education to 32 Selected Students

**For Immediate Release**
Fremont, CA — Once again, Ohlone College will be offering the Ohlone Promise Scholarship, a two-year full-ride scholarship that covers required tuition, books and enrollment fees for students graduating from public high schools in the Tri-City area (Fremont, Newark, and Union City) and planning to attend Ohlone College in Fall 2018.

As education costs rise, more and more middle-income families find themselves stretched to pay for college, just missing the threshold for federal financial aid. At this time, being able to focus on their studies full-time has been shown to significantly benefit students’ abilities to succeed in college.

The Ohlone Promise Scholarship helps address these issues by offering a two-year, full-ride scholarship so that 32 selected students can focus on their education, rather than on their finances. This, and many other scholarships are available. Past Promise Scholarship recipient, Daniel Ibanez, said, “Obtaining an engineering degree will allow me to serve as a role model for other minority students who might be hesitant to pursue a STEM Career.” Jaime Lam, another Promise Scholarship recipient majoring in Business added, “…I see my very goal to be making a positive impact on society through understanding business operations and earning prosperity for all.”

To qualify, students must plan to attend Ohlone full-time (12 units per semester) for two years, be a graduating senior from a Fremont, Newark or Union City School District, have a minimum 2.5 grade point average, complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) at fafsa.ed.gov, submit a letter of recommendation from a high school principal, teacher, or counselor, and write a short essay.

Applications for the 2018-2019 academic year began February 1 and run through March 31, 2018. Ohlonepromise.org has more information, or you can contact the Ohlone College Foundation by phone: 510-659-6020, or email: foundation@ohlone.edu.
